With the growing availability of company-branded, promotional items, many businesses and organizations may have trouble deciding which type of promotional merchandise would best suit their needs. Key chains, cold cups, insulated mugs and golf tees are just some of the many items that can be customized with a business or organization’s name, website address, telephone number or commemorative event date.

To determine which type of merchandise to order, a business must see if any items directly relate to their business. For example, if promoting a vision care supply business, having promotional eyeglass cases would be best. Another example would involve a lawn care business. While not everyone minds having a lawn sign placed on their yard, a refrigerator magnet would be ideal, as consumers can view their lawns from indoor windows and if it needs maintained, can walk over to their handy refrigerator magnet to make a service call.

Don’t forget to target specific age groups, if your particular business caters to them, when searching for the right type of promotional item. Children can always use school supplies such as pens, pencils and folders; while adult items that help increase efficiency and productivity for busy, on-the-go adults are always welcomed. Knowing your business’ targeted demographics is one of the keys to understanding your intended customer base and how they operate. Are they busy professionals? Stay at home moms? Retirees?

The easiest way, to determine which promotional items would work best, is to place yourself in the role of the consumer. Evaluate how they would best respond to your business and make a list of possible items. Then, determine which types of promotional merchandise work best with your business’ budget. While you may not be able to afford mouse pads, golf balls or t-shirts, a simple pen can have a great impact on sales. The more your promotional item is used, the more your company is recognized, and that is the best way a business can attract and retain valued customers.
